 Afforestation and forest protection works in State forestlands


Forest regeneration works completed on 8,797.26 ha of forestland (includes 3347.96 ha of forest plantation and 5,449.30 ha of natural regeneration)

146.63 kilometre (km) forest fencing completed.

Soil and water conservation works completed on 4,000 ha of forestland (6.30 lakhs staggered trenches, 7577 check dams)

Avenue plantation completed on 65-kilometre road length.

3.3 million seedlings raised by the PIs for the afforestation works.

To contain the usage of fuel wood, 3701 units of energy saving devices have been popularized.

  Agricultural development and soil and water conservation on private wastelands


6,277.89 ha of private wasteland has been treated with soil and water conservation and regeneration works, which include drainage line treatment over 216 km and agro- forestry plantations over 4,298.37 ha.

3.34 million seedlings raised by the PIs for the agro-forestry development works.

Organic farming and medicinal plantation promoted in 13.3 and 15.8 ha of land respectively.

Organic fertilizer required for the plantation works produced by the PIs themselves.

Innovative farming practices like mushroom production, vermi composting, coir-pith composting promoted.

As part of sustainable income generation, rubber cultivation has been initiated on 39 ha of land

  Promotion of Bio gas


Aimed at utilizing organic manure, which would otherwise move out of Attappady.

Controlling grazing and firewood collection.

29 Units of biogas plants commissioned so far.

  Promotion of vegetable cultivation


Aimed at encouraging vegetable cultivation in the backyards of users.

Pandals with bamboo poles and interlinking ropes support climbers like bittergourd, snakegourd, cowpea etc.

10 basin and 100 basin units promoted depending on family size and available land.

85 farmers benefited so far.

  Promotion of sericulture

  Promotion of field crops - summer ploughing


1,446 ha of fallow land brought under cultivation by facilitating ploughing prior to summer showers.

Of the total 1,854 beneficiaries, 1,532 are tribals.

63,770 kg of seeds like groundnut, maize, blackgram, redgram, cotton and cowpea have been distributed.

Discussions are on with National Seeds Corporation (NSC) for buy back arrangement

Traditional field crops promoted on 664 ha of private land.

  Water resource development works


1,666 structures including gravity irrigation systems, wells, tanks, spring protection works and ground water recharge works have been completed.

A soil and water-testing laboratory has been instituted.

9 meteorological observatories established.

 Infrastructure development works


19 UA office buildings constructed.

43.82 km road works completed in 49 different sites. In addition, 47.31 km road works in 57 different sites under progress.

40 percent of the Chavadiyur bridge work completed.

37 Community Resource Center(CRC)buildings constructed in different hamlets. Work on another 22 centers in progress.

 Human Resource Development activities


1,355 various training programmes completed involving 54,549 participants during 2006-07.

On empowerment of OVS; 545 programmes, involving 15,157participantsconducted .

34 training programmes, involving 904 AHADS staff as participants.

288 programmes including account trainings, career trainings, DUCC meetings, exchange visits, Local Action Groups (LAG) trainings, leadership trainings etc. have been given to 21,090 participants.

6 education orientation programmes involving 717 tribal members conducted.

Environment literacy programmes going on in 90 hamlets.

A documentary film, Manne Nambi (Depending on the Earth), depicting the approach and activities of the project produced.

Monthly newsletter ‘Usru’, environmental literacy newsletter in tribal language ‘Jaddu’ and a tri-monthly environmental newsletter ‘Mannu’are being published.

Handbooks, brochures and posters on various disciplines being published.

Exhibitions detailing the development activities of the project organized during the important festivals in Attappady and elsewhere.

52 eco clubs functioning at school level.

Promotion programmes on arts and science, career guidance, tribal art and culture etc. conducted

Health support programmes like medical camps, supply of medical aids to remote settlements, reviving of tribal medicines etc.

  Infrastructure facilities for health and education in Attappady


40-bed hospital building is being added to the Community Health Centre (CHC), Agali
Lab equipments worth Rs.12 lakhs provided to government hospitals.

Laboratory equipments worth Rs.6.25 lakhs provided to government tribal schools.(HS school Sholayoor and LP school Agali.)

School building works in progress in government vocational higher secondary school, Pudur, HS schools Sholayoor and Agali

Construction work at Mundanpara Homeo-clinic underway.

Laboratory, drinking water and equipment facilities at Agali, Pudur and Sholayoor health centres.

  Income Generating activiities


198 IGA groups functional with 13 to 15 members each

Group savings worth Rs.14,66,419 lakhs

Micro credit promotion protocol finalized.

  Total hamlet development programme


Being implemented in 24 hamlets, consisting of 13 programmes including housing for tribals

Total number of new houses in the progrmme is 1056, in addition to 177 houses being modified.

211 houses completed and 106 houses handed over to beneficiaries in four hamlets (Mamana, Koodanchala, Mukkali and Nayanampetty).

Works on 398 houses at completion stage.

  Kurumba development package


Development programme for the most primitive and remotely located tribal group.

17 Kurumba volunteers selected from Anavai, Kadugumanna and Thazathuduki hamlets to facilitate Kurumba development.

OVS formed in Mele Anavai and Kadugumanna hamlets .

THDP is being planned for160 households at Anavai and Kadugumanna hamlets.

Footpath laid between Anavai and Kadugumanna hamlets.

Base line survey on socio – economy completed in Anavai, Kadugumanna and Thazhathuduki hamlets.

Environmental literacy classes in Kurumba language started in Mele Anavai and Kadugumana hamlets.

A tribal girl from Thazathuduki has been sent to Junior public health nursing training.

Anganwadi (child care center) and committee office building works are progressing at Anavai and Kadugumanna hamlets.

13 youth trained in repairing solar lamps.

Repair works on the hanging bridge that leads to Kodugumanna hamlet completed.

As part of economic sustenance, 2,000 coconut, 6,000 arecanut, 50,350 coffee, 700 garcinia seedlings and 10,000 metres of pepper vine distributed in the region, in addition to vegetable seeds like cabbage and carrot.
